Located along the beach at Maroubra in Sydney, our client approached us for clever ideas to transform this compact apartment. The brief was to bring lightness and a generous feeling of space that would create a calming sanctuary. Clever solutions using joinery became the driver, which also brought in the client’s expertise as a carpenter. Adjustable joinery pieces are used where necessary and ensuring ease of use - but not falling into the trap of too many novel, movable parts as can be the case in compact spaces.

The use of strategically placed mirrored walls reflect natural light and mirror the beach views into the apartment. A window between the bedroom and living space provides a sense of the continuation of space rather than enclosure.

The material selection is natural in colour and texture drawing on tones from the marine landscape.
