Kristian Kaufmehl
Director
M.Arch | B.Arch Studies UNSW
B.Industrial Design UC
Kristian is a designer whose work is shaped by a lifelong connection to creativity, craft, and landscape. With a background spanning both Industrial Design and Architecture, he brings a refined sense of form, material and function to every project. His design approach is guided by a belief that great architecture should be both intelligent in concept and grounded in experience.
Growing up surrounded by making and building, Kristian developed a deep appreciation for design from an early age. His mother was a textile designer, his grandmother a ceramicist, and his parents were often renovating the family home. This exposure fostered his curiosity for how things are made. Kristian’s early years as a professional downhill ski racer, in Australia and internationally, also instilled a focus and discipline that continues to inform his work today.
Professionally, Kristian’s experience is as diverse as it is accomplished. He began his career in Europe as an Industrial Designer working on the design and manufacture of ski boots while living in the Austrian Alps. An interest in architecture saw him return to Australia to complete his Master of Architecture degree. After graduating, Kristian worked with notable architecture practices, leading complex mixed-use and multi-residential projects, childcare and educational facilities, and resort developments. A career highlight was as a project lead on the Frank Gehry–designed Dr Chau Chak Wing Building at UTS, where he worked at Gehry Partner’s in Los Angeles during the design stage and then through to on-site delivery in Sydney.
Kristian’s connection to the Australian Snowy Mountains has become an enduring influence, inspiring Studio KaaKi’s expansion into the region and fulfilling his long-held ambition to design within its striking alpine landscapes.
